Patrick Villechaise, you are the Chairman of the 14th World Conference on titanium which will be held on the 10th-14th June 2019 in Nantes (France). How do you think this congress is a key event for every professional (academic or industrial) working on titanium?
The World Conference on titanium is an event held every four years in a different city around the globe. Since the beginning in 1968, it brings together 600 to 800 delegates, representing the highest-level titanium community of the world (scientific, technological and industrial). The idea is to present and discuss the latest news on titanium and its alloys, where application fields are at the center of major industrial issues: for aeronautics but also for biomedical and naval.
You have defended Nantes candidacy during the last 2015 conference in San Diego (USA). What caught the international committees’ attention?
The candidature for the organization of the 14th World Conference on Titanium in Nantes has been supported by The French Titanium Association and the French Society for Metallurgy and Materials (SF2M) with the endorsement of the Pays de la Loire Region and Nantes city council. The International Committee was drawn by the SF2M and French Titanium Association union with its industrial and academic actors who will guarantee the success of this prestigious conference. The attractiveness of France and specifically Nantes also made the difference. The city is easily accessible (2 hours from Paris with the High speed trains), boasts a strong cultural life, with everything accessible by foot or by the various public transports.
What will be the major changes at this 14th conference?
First of all, the location! This is the first time Nantes hosts the World conference on titanium and only the second time in France (the first time being in Cannes in 1988). We will also innovate the program. Indeed, one afternoon will be devoted to the visit of industrial sites (more information in Spring 2019). The idea is to meet local key players working on titanium and learn about their expertise, the way they work, their equipment … We will also offer a poster session around a drink, convivial moments often contribute to create or strengthen links between delegates which is one of our objectives. Also, please note the two traditional events: the welcome reception on the 10th of June taking place in the Nantes Castle courtyard and the dinner gala organized in the famous Machine isle of Nantes location! In short, we want to make this congress an unforgettable experience by combining world-class presentations and spirit of conviviality.
